Hygiene in restaurants and grocery stores - customers must play their part

Hygiene is essential in areas where food is prepared and sold. This is not solely down to the staff. The interruption of the chain of infection also depends on customer behavior. So what hygiene methods should companies implement in customer areas?

On 7 June, the World Food Safety Day draws attention to the consequences that contaminated and spoiled food has on public health. Viruses can be easily transmitted via food, which is why the strictest measures for staff hygiene are mandatory in companies that process and sell food. This applies to restaurants, hotels, take-away services, shops and supermarkets.

But customers also play a significant role in the spread of harmful germs such as the coronavirus. Food companies should therefore integrate their customers into their hygiene concept, especially as this helps combat the current COVID-19 pandemic too

How can companies encourage customers to practice good hygiene?

  • The number of customers in shops or restaurants must be limited
  • Customers should be encouraged to respect general distance requirements
  • Distance lines marked on the floor or barrier tapes can help remind customers to maintain their distance. Markers should also be placed outside shops and restaurants to manage crowds and queues
  • In retail stores, shopping carts are a suitable means of maintaining distances. Shoppers should be encouraged to shop alone, rather than as part of a group
  • In checkout areas, the minimum distance from the staff must be maintained. If this is not possible, partition walls made of plexiglas will help.
  • If possible, cashless payments should be made.
  • Hands should be washed carefully before and after shopping.
  • The instructions of the staff must be followed.

Important: In addition to these measures, hand sanitisers should also be made available for customer use. Please download here our plans for the perfect placement of hand hygiene products in different areas:

Make sure that the hand sanitiser contains a minimum of 60 percent alcohol. Coronaviruses are sensitive to fat-dissolving substances such as alcohol. It is also important that the hand disinfectants that are used are enriched with moisturising ingredients. Excessive alcohol content can dry out the skin quickly, however, a well-balanced handsanitiser will not have this effect. Avoiding negative effects on skin health is vital to ensuring customers are willing to use the products provided.

Stay healthy!
