The global market for hand sanitisers is expected to grow by an average of 2.4% per year and reach a volume of more than 3.6 billion US dollars by 2026. Market leader GOJO has already responded by expanding its capacity to help fulfil demand.
Hand sanitisers: great demand in all areas
The market for hand sanitisers has been experiencing an above-average level of demand for months due to a global need to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Hand hygiene plays such an important role in preventing the spread of illness and the demand for hygiene products only continues to increase. According to current estimates, the market will grow by around 2.4% per year until 2026.
Health organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are increasingly promoting the use of hand hygiene products to reduce the risk of infection. According to the WHO, 80% of diseases are transmitted by the hands. This has led to a significant increase in the consumption of hand sanitisers in all industries since the start of the pandemic. In 2019, the market for alcohol-based hand sanitisers observed a record growth of 93%.
The market for foam-based hand sanitisers grew particularly rapidly, taking a 16% share of the total market. The increasing popularity of these products can be explained by their consumer-friendly nature. For example, the PURELL Advanced Hygienic Hand Sanitising Foam is quick and easy to use, contains skin conditioners to help maintain skin moisture, and kills 99.99% of most common germs that may be harmful.
GOJO prepares for increased demand
GOJO, one of the world's top suppliers of hand hygiene products, well known for its PURELL brand, has reacted to the increased demand for hand sanitisers by expanding their production capacity. GOJO recently announced the purchase of a 325,000-square-foot facility in Maple Heights, Ohio, and signed a lease agreement for another facility in Navarre, which will be used for additional storage and distribution.
GOJO Maple Heights will manufacture PURELL® Surface Sanitising Spray. This sanitising spray was launched in 2016 and has won numerous awards. Critically, it is a no-rinse product which is suitable for use on food contact surfaces, whilst being fast acting on bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including Influenza and Norovirus. Demand for the product has been enormous since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
The Group is well prepared for the future. “In service of our GOJO Purpose, Saving Lives and Making Life Better, our responsibility to keep the world healthy and well has never been greater. Expanding our manufacturing infrastructure is one of the many ways we are responding as the market leader in these challenging times”, said GOJO President and CEO Carey Jaros.
